RALEIGH -- Christmas is just a week away, giving shoppers less than seven days to get all their gifts.

And though retailers slashed prices earlier and offered more deals than before in hopes of luring shoppers into their stores and getting them to make purchases, surveys show more consumers have fallen behind in their holiday shopping this year.

Crowds were massive on Black Friday, but surveys show that the number of shoppers has been down so far this year.

Most stores did see heavy traffic on major shopping days like Black Friday but overall, retail experts say the average consumer has gotten less than half of his or her shopping done. That's a 10 percent decline from this time last year.

If you have not started your holiday shopping at all, the National Retail Federation says you're in the same boat as more than 41 million other Americans.

It does appear the increased amount of shopping procrastination is affecting sales. Figures show that last week's sales are down by almost half a percent compared to the previous year and some experts predict that means retailers will offer more sales and discounts in the final week before Christmas.
