RALEIGH – N.C. State women's basketball coach Kay Yow will miss the rest of the season as she continues to battle breast cancer.

Tuesday, Yow along with Athletics Director Lee Fowler announced her leave of absence.

During a December trip to New York, Yow complained about having a low energy level and missed the team's game against Columbia at the tail end of the road swing.

After that, the school had been treating Yow's status day to day and she has not been able to return to her coaching duties for the past three games.

Yow has been fighting breast cancer since 1987 and was forced to miss 16 games during the 06-07 season before coming back and leading the Pack to a Sweet 16 appearance.

Associate coach Stephanie Glance will take over on an interim basis for the rest of the season. Glance is in her 15th year at State.

Glance and her players reacted to Yow's cancer battle following a recent home game.

"I'm thankful for her dedication to the team, to our fans, N.C. State University," NCSU guard Shayla Fields said.

"She never gets down and she never shows any kind of negative emotion. She's always completely positive, maintains a really positive attitude. And she's very upbeat about it," Glance said.

N.C. State fans can send words of encouragement through the school's athletic Web site, GoPack.com.
