FAYETTEVILLE -- Many grocery stores are now offering a new way to help out the environment, and helping out is as simple as choosing how to bag your groceries.
Sandra Kelly used a new canvas grocery bag for the first time recently and was pleasantly surprised.
"I couldn't believe how much it did carry,” she said. “I was amazed."
The bags are designed to help the environment. They give green-minded customers a reusable alternative to the usual choice. Using them helps keep forests full and landfills empty.
Carlie C’s manager Gary Murray says you can use them for more than just groceries.
“Lot of people use them to carry books and stuff, you know if you're going to the library,” he said. “We actually had people buying them and giving them away for Christmas presents and stuff."
The bags are available at many grocery stores and other retailers. They usually cost less than $2.
