GREENSBORO – Students from N.C. A&T, Greensboro College and UNCG were invited to Bennett College’s campus for a fundraiser and party in honor of Dennis Hayle.

22-year-old Hayle was shot and killed Sunday outside his apartment complex near N.C. A&T State University.

"Dennis was a great man and he impacted my life. He brought out the better person in me and I'm going to miss him a lot. I really love him, that was my best friend," Eugene Banks said.

Volunteers also joined Greensboro police and other law enforcement from High Point and Winston-Salem to canvas the half mile radius from where Hayle was killed.

They handed out fliers and placed them on cars in the hopes that someone will come forward with information about those responsible for Hayle’s death.

Those who knew Hayle best said he was happy and carefree. So instead of mourning, students from area colleges and universities decided to get together and celebrate his life.

"We're celebrating the impact that he had. There are people from all over here in this cafeteria with a day and a half of planning," Bennett College student and event organizer Janine Quarles said.

"Funeral expenses are really expensive and you know his mother is already going through enough, so it's good to raise money for her to help her out a lot," Eugene Banks, Hayle's fraternity brother, said.

Those who knew him, and even some who didn't, joined hands as one community, sharing laughs, memories and tears.

"I hope people leave here feeling good, feeling better that if they knew him that was an act of God, that you were able to have him in your life. If you didn't know him you were able to learn about him through things like this and through different things on this campus," Quarles said.

Legette is helping to plan a unity march in Hayle's memory on Feb. 7 where students will leave their various colleges and universities and walk downtown, meeting in Center City Park.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (336) 373-1000.
