KURE BEACH -- The Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross hosted its annual preparedness and response conference in Kure Beach this weekend. It gives staff and volunteers a chance to prepare for the worst with disaster training.
"Preparation is very important, because if they don't have it they are going to be confused when they have to deal with a disaster," said William Holley, a Red Cross volunteer.
At the conference, volunteers and staff are learning key ways to handle emergency situations like how to cook for all those people in need with the organization’s mobile kitchen.
"It can feed up to 10,000 meals a day, and we are getting ready to hold a training class to teach students to prepare meals in large quantities in this trailer," said Liz Welker, Red Cross volunteer
Red Cross representatives said disaster training is especially important for volunteers on the coast to help prepare for hurricanes.
"During hurricane season we are in a high-risk zone and we need to be prepared for it," said Victoria Kling, a Red Cross staff member.
A disaster can strike quickly and without warning, and Red Cross staff members said these training courses help them to plan for the unexpected.
