CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Animal Care and Control Unit is setting up a pet food bank for those who can't afford to feed their animals.

Officers say they've noticed an increase in the number of pets being brought in by their owners because of the cost of food, and foreclosures and evictions.

The food bank will be made possible through donations from the community.

It’s the community helping the community and it’s just been overwhelming, the response we’ve gotten from people wanting to help,” said Melissa Knicely, of Animal Care and Control. “Everyone can bond with an animal, everyone loves animals, so I think we’ve got a unique opportunity to give something that people can donate to where they are helping animals and they’re also helping people in need.

If you would like to donate, you can bring either pet food or monetary donations to Animal Care and Control, located at 8315 Byrum Drive. All food must be unopened.

If you need help with your pets, you can go by the shelter and sign up for temporary help.
