CARTHAGE, N.C. – Authorities said eight are dead after a gunman opened fire at the Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center on Pinehurst Avenue in Carthage, N.C. Sunday morning.

Police said 45-year-old Robert Stewart of Moore County walked into the facility and shot 11 people, including seven patients ranging in age from 78 to 98 years and a nurse, all of whom were killed.

A police officer who responded to the shooting and two other people were also shot before the gunman was shot.

Carthage Police Chief Chris T. McKenzie said Justin Garner, the officer who was shot, was brought to the hospital and is in good condition.

Moore County District Attorney Maureen Krueger called Garner a "well-trained officer who performed his job" and called his actions "nothing short of heroic."

Meanwhile, authorities said Stewart is in the sheriff's custody.

McKenzie said the investigation was ongoing and he therefore could not disclose all the details. He said police plan to hold another press conference Monday morning at 10:00.

"It's a horrible event in any size town, particularly though when you deal with a small town like Carthage," McKenzie said. "It's hard. It's my town, I was born and raised here."

Some families gathered at the First Baptist Church of Carthage to wait for news on their loved ones (Watch Video). Authorities said crisis counseling will be available for families of victims and area residents.

"This is a small community built on faith, and faith will get us through," McKenzie said.

The 110-bed Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center, a facility for rehabilitation, nursing and Alzheimer's care, opened in Carthage in 1993.
