TRENTON, N.C. – Officials in Trenton, N.C. voted to create a curfew to keep people under 18 off the streets from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. in an attempt to keep the nighttime peace.
“We got enough complaints from the different communities and they just decided, ‘Well, we’re going to do something about it,’” Town Clerk Glenn Spivey said.
Spivey was one of the driving forces behind the curfew.
“Fifteen-year-olds have no business being out at 2:00 in the morning,” Spivey said.
But Trenton residents said they have mixed feelings.
“They’re just going home,” 16-year-old Montana Rouse said. “They are thinking, ‘Well, am I going to get in trouble? What happens? I’m just going home. I’m not doing anything.’”
Some parents, however, said they think the curfew is a good idea.
“I don’t think it’s really up to them,” parent Lynn Driver said. “I think when they become the adults, they can make the decisions. Right now, they need someone to make decisions for them.”
The first time a person under 18 is caught out after 10 p.m., they will have to go home. The second time they’ll have to pay a $50 fine. And the third offence is a $100 fine.
“The kids created the problem for themselves by being out on the street,” Spivey said.
A minor can be out after 10 p.m. with a parent or guardian. There’s also exceptions for work and school and church events.
