KINSTON, N.C. – The state Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash in Kinston that involved an off-duty Pink Hill, N.C., police officer.

Troopers say 34-year-old Michael Hoffman was driving the truck that sideswiped one vehicle and hit another head-on. Wilda Turner, 57, was killed in the accident.

No charges have yet been filed against Hoffman, and troopers say alcohol and speed have been ruled out as factors.

At Lenoir Community College, where Turner used to work, the hurt over her death is still fresh.

"It's hard to put into words because it still doesn't seem real," co-worker Debbie White said.

Turner worked in the payroll department at the college since 2006.

"She was probably one of the happiest people you've ever met," White said. "She was always in a good mood, always friendly"

Those who worked with her say Turner was a diligent worker. In fact, she was on her way to work early when she was involved in the crash.

"We worked a lot of long hours, and Wilda took her job very seriously," co-worker Jessica McMahon said. "She always wanted to do what was best for the college."

Turner's car was struck on N.C. Highway 11, near the Kinston Drag Strip. Hoffman also worked as a Lenoir County EMT.

"While we're going to give all the support we can to our employee and his family, certainly our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Turner who passed away," Emergency Services Director Roger Dail said.

Dail says Hoffman was on his way to his EMT job when he crashed.

"He's a very good worker, a very caring young man," Dail said.

Investigators say the woman in the other car, Gail Avery, was treated and released from the hospital.
