WILMINGTON – Some summer camps across North Carolina are making their programs more affordable. They're offering lower prices or special deals to help families make ends meet.
This summer, kids can enjoy Wilmington's YMCA Summer Camp at a more affordable price. By moving its program back to the YMCA facility, the camp lowered its weekly fee to $115, which offers a savings of $30 a week over last summer.
"We felt that both of those actions would make it easier for families to feel like they were getting good value in summer camp experience and make it possible for kids to spend a week or a summer at a YMCA Summer Camp," said Dick Jones, Wilmington YMCA CEO.
Jones said more families are seeking greater quantities of financial aid this year. To help out, the YMCA offers a variety of scholarships.
"Perhaps families have now one person out of work," said Jones. "Making camp a little bit more affordable was a good move on our part."
Many parents, including Lakecia Williams, said the affordable prices make all the difference.
"I was glad that – to see the price change so he could have a good time at the summer camp with the other kids," Williams said.
Some other camps across the state also lowered their prices or offered special deals. The South Charlotte Sports Report Camp offers discounted prices for campers who enroll in multiple sessions.
"There's a lot of people struggling. So what we did is we put together,r a package where if you attended more than one camp, we gave discounts for that," Tripp Roakes, owner of the South Charlotte Sports Report Camp, said. "If you added a second camp, it was about a 17 percent discount, the third camp comes with a 25 percent discount."
Camp organizers promise that while the price is lower, the fun level for campers will be just as high.
