LUMBERTON, N.C. – A Robeson County fertilizer plant was destroyed Sunday after a massive fire broke out in the facility.
Fire officials were called to the Southern States Plant in Lumberton, N.C., just before 10 a.m. They say firefighters from 17 different departments from Robeson and Bladen counties assisted in battling the blaze.
No one was injured and firefighters were able to contain it in less than two hours. They began monitoring the fire Sunday afternoon.
The plant's manager said it's a tough situation, but he plans to work through it.
"Everybody's going to come in tomorrow, and we're going to see what needs to be done, and we'll try to keep everybody employed," manager Mark Gillis said.
Authorities also blocked off about a half-mile of Highway 211 for a few hours, enabling them to bring in equipment and keep bystanders away.
Fire officials said they would continue to monitor the fire throughout the night as it continued to burn down.
