RALEIGH -- The end of the fiscal year is July 1, but lawmakers are still working on the state budget. Monday night, they are due to discuss what to do in case a budget is not passed by Tuesday.
The full N.C. House plans to vote on a bill Monday that would allow the state government to keep operating for another two weeks. The N.C. Senate has already passed its version of a temporary spending bill that will keep things moving until a two-year spending plan is finalized.
Under the Senate plan, the government will keep running at a spending level that’s 85 percent of this current year. Once a temporary measure is in place, lawmakers will get back to the task of working out the actual two-year budget plan.
North Carolina is facing a budget shortfall of more than $4 billion. It’s likely that tax increases will be seen in the final budget, as both chambers have already passed their versions of spending cuts and tax increases. Lawmakers still have to work out a compromise about that, as well.
