CHARLOTTE – Starting Wednesday, Charlotte residents will be able to sign up to save about 20 percent on their prescriptions, as the city council is taking part in a national prescription drug saving program through CVS.

More than 60 cities in the country offer the plan, and Queen City leaders will be discussing ways for area residents to get in on the savings at their meeting Wednesday night. There is no cost to sign up for the CVS Caremark prescription drug card. There are no income requirements, but the card can only be used on medicine not covered by your health insurance.

The program claims to save customers 20 percent in the store and up to 50 percent on mail-in prescriptions. City council members who recommended the plan in committee back in April said 90 percent of all Charlotte pharmacies would be eligible to participate.

Nine out of 10 pharmacies accept the card.

There was some concern by smaller independent pharmacies that the card wouldn’t work at their businesses, though a search Wednesday showed 100 pharmacies listed in Charlotte that will honor the card.
