SALISBURY – Race events at Lowe's Motor Speedway are ramping up, and one group will be adding solar power to its efforts to go green during race week.

Safety-Kleen Systems follows the Sprint Cup drivers to their 39 races across the country, making sure oil, tires, chemicals and other toxic substances are properly disposed of during race events.

There's an energized push within NASCAR to be greener. That's why Safety-Kleen is NASCAR's official environmental company.

"We take care of the oils, the waste fuels, we take care of parts cleaning fluids and solvents. All that material is brought back to our recycle centers and we turn it into new product again," Buddy Judy, with Safety-Kleen, said.

Back in the late 80s, Lowe's Motor Speedway was the first track to start collecting used motor oil. After this week's Speed Week, 2,000 gallons of motor oil will be re-refined and sold. That's one reason Safety-Kleen wanted to test Lowe's Motor Speedway for their solar power program.

The sun was high and bright Tuesday, energized a solar panel that will power Safety-Kleen's entire recycling center and business trailer during race week.

"That's something new as far as we know. No one's used solar panels inside a race track before. No one's done anything we know with NASCAR with solar energy, so we're not buying a carbon credit," Judy said. "We're actually using things straight from the sun, making the power here at the track."

The forecast isn't calling for much sunshine in the next few days, but the system stores energy. That means rain or shine, solar power will be in full force.
