GASTON COUNTY, N.C. – A man critically hurt in a kayak accident on the South Fork Catawba River has died.

Emergency workers were called to the river Saturday afternoon when two men went into the water. One managed to reach an island, but the other, 48-year-old Eric Walker Bohanan, was pulled from the river unconscious.

Rescuers say the river was more than twice its normal level and nearly two feet above flood stage. The water temperature at the time of Saturday’s accident was 39 degrees.

Rescuers say neither man was wearing a life jacket when pulled from the water.
