LANDIS, N.C. -- Police are expected to charge a Kannapolis man in connection with a wreck Tuesday night that killed a pregnant woman and her unborn baby.
Landis police say Rigo Verto Guillen Martinez was driving erratically at about 80 mph on South Main Street around 5 p.m. when he went around a curve and collided head-on with a car driven by 20-year-old Leanna Newman. Martinez reportedly slowed to about 40 mph right before the crash.
Police say Rigo Martinez slowed from 80 mph to 40 mph right before the head-on collision.
Newman and her unborn child died Wednesday morning at Carolinas Medical Center. A toddler in the car with Newman was pulled from the wreck with minor injuries. Martinez was listed in fair condition.
Martinez could be charged with felony death by vehicle, but the accident is still being reviewed by the district attorney’s office. The accident report is expected to be completed Thursday. Police say it is not clear yet if alcohol was a factor.
Kannapolis police say Martinez was involved in two prior accidents and an officer was following him when he crashed. There are conflicting reports, though, whether the officer’s blue lights were on.
