LANDIS, N.C. -- The Kannapolis man accused of causing a deadly crash Tuesday in Landis will be arrested, but it is unclear what charges he will face, authorities said Thursday.
Landis police are still investigating the crash killed 20-year-old Leanna Newman and her unborn child. They say Rigo Martinez was traveling upwards of 80 mph on South Main Street before taking a curve and hitting Newman’s car head-on.
Martinez remains in fair condition at Carolina’s Medical Center.
Police are still waiting on a blood-alcohol test and an immigration report on Rigo Martinez.
Chief Reggie Faggart says he is still waiting on a blood-alcohol test, an immigration report and a report from the Kannapolis Police Department before charges can be filed. A Kannapolis officer was behind Martinez at the time of the crash but it is unclear whether or not the officer was in pursuit.
Newman’s family has not yet finalized funeral plans but area residents are paying their respects by placing flowers at the crash site.
A fund has been set up for Mallory Faith, Newman’s 21-month-old child who survived the crash, and her husband, Brad. Donations can be made at any Wachovia bank.
