Authorities say Rigo Martinez has been arrested under at least six different names in Rowan County and has been deported twice before.
LANDIS, N.C. -- An illegal immigrant accused of driving drunk and causing a head-on crash that killed a 20-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child earlier this month has been indicted by a grand jury.
In addition to the second-degree murder and driving while impaired charges, Rigo Martinez was indicted on two new charges -- hit-and-run and failure to stop after causing property damage.
On Feb. 6, authorities say Martinez’s vehicle collided with the car being driven by Leanna Newman on Main Street in Landis. Newman and her unborn child died and another toddler in the car survived with minor injuries.
Authorities say Martinez has been arrested under at least six different names in Rowan County and has been deported twice before.
He is being held under a $1 million bond at Central Prison in Raleigh, where he was taken because of his medical condition.
