FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- As summer approaches and temperatures start to soar, so does water use. So to keep water waste to a minimum the Fayetteville Public Works Commission (PWC) is restarting its water conservation plan -- putting people in Fayetteville on a schedule for outdoor water use.
"I think it's a good program because water conservation obviously is something that we need to be very aware of," said Tom Carpenter of Fayetteville.
Starting May 1, home addresses ending with an even number may water on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Addresses ending in an odd number may water on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
PWC representatives said the plan was needed for Fayetteville because the city was using record amounts of water.
"Prior to this plan going into affect we used over 40 million gallons a day on numerous occasions and these peaks continued to grow,” said Carolyn Justice Hinson of PWC. “Since this program has gone into affect we haven't gotten higher than the high 30 million gallons."
The program was also designed to prepare people to be proactive should the area face a future water crisis.
"We ready for these situations, if we have to implement stricter measures, people are already in the habit of managing their water use," said Hinson.
Carpenter said managing water usage is a priority for him this summer and he hopes that others see the issue in the same light.
"The upcoming warm season and droughts, water gets down during the season," said Hinson. “I think its important that we all pay close attention to what we're doing and use only what we're going to need."
The outdoor water schedules will run through Sept. 30.
