CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. -- A man was arrested overnight Tuesday in one of the largest drug busts in Cleveland County history.

Deputies were conducting a routine checkpoint on Mount Sinai Church Road near Shelby when they noticed a car abruptly turn into a driveway.

They say Luis Enrique Sanchez Ortega, 33, jumped out of his car and ran. Deputies discovered 220 pounds of marijuana inside the car. It’s valued at $750,000.

After an hour-long search with a police helicopter and K9 unites, Ortega was caught hanging on an axle underneath a parked truck.

He told police that he lives in Newberry, S.C. and that he is not a U.S. citizen.

Ortega is charged with trafficking marijuana and is now being held under $1 million bond.
