RALEIGH -- Two runners in North Carolina were hit and killed while jogging. It took police a long time to identify them because they were not wearing ID at the time of the accidents.
Tammy Horne has just started running to get fit. “I started walking in the middle of the summer and I'm moving it up to the next level."
But she hasn't taken her safety to the next level. “I've never really considered not being safe in the middle of the day."
But it can be unsafe in the middle of the day in traffic and especially without identification.
"Running into traffic is a lot safer than running with traffic and it's important to run with some sort of identification, either your driver's license or something in your shoe,” advised Jim Michaels of Raleigh Running Outfitters.
Running can even be unsafe in the middle of the day in traffic and especially if you are not carring ID.
The best ID on your shoe is the same one you put on your best friend.
“We recommend people go to like a PetSmart and get a dog ID tag and wear that,” Michaels continued.
With Daylight Saving Time coming to an end, running experts say if you can't get your workout in before the sun goes down, you need something like a reflective vest or a blinking light to make you visible to drivers.
Using iPods or earbuds is becoming more and more popular but it distracts you from your environment,” Michaels continued.
It’s a distraction Horne said she's willing to give up for safety. “Maybe I'll take my iPod out of my ears so I can listen up a little better."
The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation reminds joggers to stay on sidewalks and greenways. If you're running near traffic, face the traffic if you can and always carry identification.
