The NAACP rallied Sunday in Wilson in suppport of James Johnson.
WILSON, N.C. -- The NAACP held a rally Sunday night calling for the full exoneration of James Johnson.

Johnson spent nearly three and a half years in jail awaiting trial on murder and rape charges in connection to the killing of 17-year-old Brittany Willis. Those charges have been dropped but he's still charged with accessory after the fact in the 2004 homicide.

Johnson's case will head to a grand jury Monday.

"As for the Willis family, I understand your pain,” Johnson’s father, Arthur, said. “If I had been lied to for three and a half years, I wouldn't know which way to go either.”

Kenneth Meeks has confessed to the crime and is serving a life sentence. He originally told investigators that Johnson was involved, but recanted and has since maintained he acted alone.

Sunday night's rally came just two days after 400 people gathered in support of Willis. They say her story has gotten lost in all the coverage of Johnson's case.
