HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- Volunteers came together this weekend to plant 500 tiny saplings in the Torrence Creek Greenway in Huntersville.

The greenway is part of the McDowell Creek watershed, which feeds into Mountain Island Lake. Volunteers were there from American Forests, the Sierra Club, CPCC and Mecklenburg County.

“I think we really need to start paying attention to the effect our actions have on the natural world,” said Kalle Thompson, a CPCC student. “The longer we go without paying attention to it, and trying to correct the problems we perceive, the harder its going to be at the end of the day.”

The trees include at least eight varieties.
