SALISBURY -- A Salisbury man is trying to cut down on emissions and help the environment, one truck at a time.

Bob Craig’s truck stop offers a little bit of everything: Gas, food, hair cut, faith. Now, there’s more coming to his arsenal. He plans to build 50 electrified spaces for truck drivers to use over night.

“You’re going to see these drivers utilizing these things, and most importantly you’re going to see these engines shut down,” said Craig. “[The engines running] is causing all this pollution.”

The outlets will allow truckers to have electricity without running their engines, cutting down on pollution and gas usage.

North Carolina is a state without an idle law, which are typically enacted to cut down on emissions. Atlanta has a 15 minute idle time limit. Virginia’s is 10 minutes. There are fines if trucks run longer.

There are currently two electrified truck stops in the state. Craig says state and federal grant money has already been allotted for construction. The truck stop is off Exit 71 on Interstate 85.
