FAYETTEVILLE – Filing taxes can be a stressful situation for many Americans. But for taxpayers who don't speak English, it can be even more stressful.
Many tax offices have begun making it easier, by marketing to Hispanics.
Angela Perrier, who owns the Liberty Tax Service on Owen Drive in Fayetteville, started catering to Hispanics this year.
"They're a very good asset to our community,” she said. “So we have to give back and try and help them."
Perrier has catered to Hispanics’ needs by handing out flyers advertising her services in Spanish. She also has hired an interpreter, and other Spanish speaking employees.
"They feel a lot more comfortable when they have a person that speaks Spanish to them,” Perrier said. “And they feel that they can ask questions.”
Many tax offices have begun making it easier, by marketing to Hispanics.
Kristina O'Keefe, a tax consultant, is one of the Spanish speaking employees at the business. She says many Hispanics feel isolated when no one knows their language. But a tax consultant who can communicate effectively in Spanish can overcome that barrier. O’Keefe’s understanding of the many tax rules and regulations that affect the Hispanic community is beneficial as well.
“[Catering to the Hispanics] opens up doors and allows other clients to come in here," she said.
And that, in turn, opens doors for more business. Perrier says that Hispanic customers refer their friends to her tax service. And after beginning to cater to Hispanics this year, she says her business has increased by about 75 percent.
