Biker struck, dies
Police say 60-year-old Nancy Leidy was struck by N.C. State student Brian Reid of Graham. Leidy was riding a bicycle near the campus at the time the incident occurred Wednesday.
RALEIGH -- A woman who was hit by a car while riding her bike in Raleigh on Wednesday has died.

Police said 60-year-old Nancy Leidy was struck by N.C. State student Brian Reid of Graham. Wednesday was his 21st birthday, and officials said he was drunk when he hit Leidy on Nazareth Street near campus around 11 a.m.

This is the fourth serious bicycle accident reported in the state in the last month.

"Even if you're obeying all the laws, doing everything right, you can still be involved in a collision,” said Bruce Rosar of the N.C. Bicycle Club.

Police say 60-year-old Nancy Leidy was struck by N.C. State student Brian Reid of Graham.
Added Sgt. V.R. Johnson of the Raleigh Police bike unit, “Do everything you can do as far as a bicyclist to make yourself in a safe position. Being to the right of the road, following the rules of the road.”

Last month, a UNC Greensboro professor was seriously injured on his bicycle. Also in March, Fayetteville police investigated two serious bicycle accidents on the same day.

Reid faces felony serious injury by vehicle and drunk driving charges as of 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night. Those could be upgraded now that Leidy has died.

He has a court appearance scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday.
