FORT BRAGG -- The Army says three North Carolina-based Special Forces soldiers have died in Afghanistan when their vehicle rolled into a river and they drowned.
The Army Special Operations Command said Monday the non-battle accident occurred Saturday in Kandahar province. They were traveling in an RG-31 Mine Protected Vehicle.
The victims were identified as 39-year-old Master Sgt. Shawn E. Simmons of Ashland, Mass.; 32-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey M. Radamorales of Naranjito, Puerto Rico, and 24-year-old Sgt. James M. Treber of San Diego, Calif.
All the soldiers were assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg.
NC-based Marine killed in combat
CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- A Marine from a North Carolina-based special operations battalion also died in combat in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense said 28-year-old Staff Sgt. Edgar A. Heredia of Houston died June 26 during combat in Farah province, Afghanistan.
Heredia was assigned to the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command at Camp Lejeune.
