CHARLOTTE -- The United Way of Central Carolinas kicks off its annual fund-raising campaign Friday.

Officials say this year, because of the slow economy, the organization is not setting a fund-raising goal, instead it plans to work to rebuild the public’s trust.

Gloria Pace King was removed last week as CEO in light of a controversy following the news that her 2007 total compensation package was more than $800,000, more than seven times her 2006 salary.

This week, United Way board of directors chairman Graham Denton resigned. He will be replaced by Wachovia executive vice president Carlos Evans.

The last time the United Way didn't set a fund-raising goal was 1994. The organization raised $45.3 million last year.
