CHARLOTTE – Some struggling North Carolina industries could be among the last to recover from the recession.

Experts say the economy is improving, but different industries will improve at different rates. For some, it could be months or even years before they fully recover.

Leading the way in recovery will be industries like health care, manufacturing and government jobs.

"The industries that will come back after that are industries that benefit from people having a little more disposable income," UNC Charlotte economist Tony Plath.

Plath said that includes transportation, travel and tourism, hospitality and retail. He said the last group to recover will be banking, construction and real estate.

"We've just got too much inventory in those areas or we've still got excess capacity, too many people looking for work in those industries," Plath said.

But Plath said they will improve, and people looking for work should eventually find something.

Things are looking up at Zebra Restaurant and Wine Bar, where Jim Alexander is hiring new employees – something he hasn't done in months.

"It's been such a long time," Alexander said.

Other restaurant managers say they're also seeing more customers, and Plath said that's good news for the future.

"There are signs of life emerging from the economy," Plath said.
