GREENSBORO -- The Guilford County Health Department held its first Women's Health Fair on Thursday, and dozens of women packed the Maple Street office for a little practical pampering.
"If you think about the women in your life, they are often times moms, they work outside the home, maybe they are even caring for aging parents. And as a result they are looking after everyone but themselves," said Lynne Beck, a spokeswoman for the Guilford County Health Department.
Health care workers were on hand Thursday to talk about everything from nutrition to heart disease.
"In addition to nutrition and exercise we will have displays on cardiovascular help, [and] clinical services that the health department provides such as family planning and maternity," Beck added.
There were also screenings for HIV and syphilis, and Thursday's fair was a chance for the health department to tout its services.
"It's an opportunity for women to come out and learn all about what the local health department offers in terms of services for women as well as gain valuable information about how to better their health," Beck said.
"We have important roles in our family and our community, and we can best serve those roles when we are at our best and that means when we are healthy."
National Women's Health Week lasts from May 12 to May 16.
