Parents can weigh in on reassignment

RALEIGH -- Parents will be able to voice their opinions Thursday night about Wake County's new student reassignment plan. The first of many public hearings gets under way at 6:30 p.m. at Knightdale High School.

Wake County runs the largest public school system in the state and the numbers keep increasing. The new plan is an effort by school officials to map out the next three years for close to 27,000 students.

The plan would affect students of all grade levels and would be based largely on the county's ability to open 10 new schools.

After this and several more public hearings, school board members will get a revised version of the plan by mid-December. More public forums will then take place in January, and the final vote is expected at the beginning of February.

School officials are looking to map out the next three years for nearly 27,000 students.
