Political Connections: County taxes
11/17/2007 12:33 PM
By: News 14 Carolina Staff

NORTH CAROLINA -- Voters in all 16 counties shot down the land transfer tax proposal in voting earlier this month. This vote was joined by 11 of 16 counties also voting against a sales tax increase.

County officials in those 16 counties say they desperately need the money to keep up with growth. Proponents of the proposals said they were needed to build schools and to help things like water and sewer infrastructure.

Opponents of the proposals said the counties just don’t need the money.

To discuss the issue, Todd McGee from the County Commissioners Association joined News 14 Carolina’s Tim Boyum. He is the organizations communication director, and was involved in helping counties get their message across to voters.

Becki Gray from the John Locke Foundation was also in the studio, talking with Rob Boisvert about the county tax referendums. Gray is the director of the State Policy Research Center at the John Locke Foundation.

We want to know what you think. Vote in the News14.com unscientific Snappoll and tell us what tax you are most likely to approve to help counties deal with infrastructure needs. As of 12:30 p.m. Saturday, 53 percent of voters said they would approve none of the possible taxes. Be sure to vote in the poll to the right, and leave a comment about your feelings on the county tax situation.
