FAYETTEVILLE -- The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is urging parents to watch what their kids are doing with their cell phones.
The warning comes after a 15-year-old boy was charged Tuesday with 21 felony counts of sexually exploiting a minor because he allegedly had photos of several girls on his cell phone.
At a news conference Wednesday morning, authorities pointed out that it does not matter if both parties are minors or if both kids agreed to it because taking sexually explicit pictures or videos of minors is against the law.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is urging parents to pay closer attention to what their children are doing with their cell phones.
The sheriff's office says this is one of two such cases in the last month and a half, and that this is an increasing problem among teenagers with cell phones.
"We live in a society today where there are predators at every corner,” said Lt. Lynette Hodges. “There is somebody out there looking to do something to your child, whether it be another child or an adult, and we have to know what our children are doing."
The 15-year-old boy is in the hands of the juvenile court, but authorities do say that he might have to register as a sex offender.
