GREENSBORO -- Greensboro's two mayoral candidates faced off Tuesday in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters. With a little less than two months before Election Day, this was their opportunity to talk in depth about the issues.
The topics were wide ranging as the candidates talked about the investigation into the Greensboro Police Department, city economic development and what they would do to make Greensboro green.
“[I would] get the City Council to give a mandate to the city employees that they start going and start making all of our buildings environmentally green,” said candidate Milton Kern.
But candidate Yvonne Johnson thought cleaner air was a better place to start.
"I think that we need to continue to improve public transportation, buses, light rail, bike trails and PART because these will cut down on the carbon monoxide and the gases,” explained Johnson.

Both candidates were on the same page when it came to the Heart of the Triad Project. Each says regionalism is the way to a strong future.
“I think that our future in some ways rests on regionalism and our cooperation in providing services across a large area,” said Johnson.
Although Kern pointed out, "I don't want them to start creating another municipality that they'll want to split off and become another entity that we have to deal with, with all the issues in the Piedmont.”
The most anticipated question though dealt with the handling of police Chief David Wray and Monday’s indictments of two police officers.
“No, I don't like the way it was handled. I don't like the outcome of it,” Kern said. "If I had been mayor I would have tried every way I could to get some kind of answer to those questions before what happened, happened.”
"I agree with Keith Holliday when he said there are no winners in this," agreed Johnson. "There is no joy in having two -- or if there are more to come, any -- of our police officers indicted. It is a situation that is a dark time in our history, and we need to work to heal it."
The League of Women Voters is giving you a chance to meet the at-large City Council candidates; they will host a forum on Monday night at Greensboro College.
