Blind bowler brings home the bronze

GREENSBORO -- She went "Down Under" an under dog and came back on top of her game. We first introduced you to Melody Health back in September while she was preparing for the International Blind Bowlers Tournament in Australia. Well she's back -- but she didn’t come back empty-handed.

"They weren't expecting me to win anything," she said.

When Heath first learned she was going to represent the United States in the International Blind Bowlers Tournament in Sydney, Australia, she was just honored to be chosen.

“Because I was the youngest on the team and the youngest to apply, I was actually not sure if I would be chosen."

Heath says she never imagined she would medal.

"I got one in singles handicapped, one in all-around handicapped and the most unexpected one was in all-around scratch."

Melody brought home three bronze medals this week against some pretty stiff competition.

"Finland, Great Britain, Japan, Malasia... [it was] very intense, very challenging. I mean you're bowling against the best from those other countries," explained Heath.

Now the Greensboro bowler is setting her sites on helping others.

"We're trying to raise the awareness of blind bowling to get more blind bowlers and visually impaired people out there to bowl."

But don't call her a role model.

"I don't see myself as one even though a lot of people say I'm an inspiring site. I just live each day when I can, and I help when I can, and just try to do the best I can."

Melody is also working on her bachelor's degree at UNC Greensboro in Women's and Gender Studies.

When she graduates in 2009, she plans to open a shelter for battered women.
