WINSTON-SALEM -- One year ago this weekend, a brawl at the Red Rooster Nightclub turned deadly for a Winston-Salem Police officer.
The fight spilled into the parking lot and gunfire broke out, forcing law enforcement units to respond to the scene. Sgt. Howard Plouff, 41, was shot in the face and died several hours later in the hospital, leaving being a wife and two daughters.

He was the first Winston-Salem Police officer to be killed in the line of duty in 12 years.
The mayor declared 17 days of mourning in honor of Plouff’s years of service, and officers from all over the state came to his funeral.
