GREENSBORO -- The phone is ringing off the hook at tax offices around the state, with people waiting their turn to get their taxes done by the deadline.
Janie Seagraves of Julian, N.C. says she waits every year until the last minute.
"I want to keep my money as long as I can, because we always have to pay," she said.
And she's not alone. Ann Lancaster with H&R Block in Greensboro says they've been busy.
"The last few days here have been very hectic, we've been trying to help everyone get their taxes completed," Lancaster said.
The IRS says last minute filers can make a lot of simple mistakes, like getting their social security number wrong, making math mistakes, or even forgetting to sign their return.
Mark Hansen with the IRS office in Greensboro says electronic filing is generally more accurate that filing by paper.
"The IRS finds when a taxpayer electronically files their returns there's less than a 1-percent chance for a simple error," said Hansen. "When a taxpayer files on paper there's about a 20-percent chance of making a simple error."
Lamont Davis of Greensboro was among the folks waiting in line for a little help at the IRS office.
He said he's "a procrastinator, like plenty of Americans," and added, "I just got a little behind and just didn't do it."
He says he'll try to get his return finished, but may file for an extension.
Even if you do file for an extension, you'll still be eligible for an economic stimulus payment, if you quality. However, it won't arrive until after you file a 2007 tax return.
