News 14 Carolina's Stephanie Stilwell has more on what storm victims should look for when hiring a company to help with cleanup.
CLEMMONS, N.C. -- Disasters can bring out the best in people but it can also bring out the worst.
As hundreds of property owners in the Triad seek out contractors to help clear the debris left from last week's tornado destruction, they are being urged to make sure they find reputable companies.
“During situations like this where storms roll through, there are a lot of people ready to make some money and help some people out but they get in a little bit of a hurry and don't use the right equipment, the right ropes and safety equipment and stuff can really go wrong,” warned Bobby Gates, of Affordable Cut Above Tree Service
Gates says people offer their services because it's a quick way to make money, and though they think they can handle it, that's not always the case. He says established companies like his have already taken the steps necessary to do the job right.
The Better Business Bureau says you should look for some specific things before you hire someone to fix your damage.
“We've invested in the right equipment to do this job. We've got insurance to cover the homeowners property. We are with the Better Business Bureau,” he said.
The Better Business Bureau says you should look for some specific things before you hire someone to fix your damage. Ask for local references and take a look at some of their work, find out if the company is insured in case of an accident and of you can also call the bureau to see if the company has any complaints filed against it.
“Just be careful who you hire and that you don't pay anybody until they are done with the whole job they say they are going to do and that has a legitimate business doing this kind of work so you don't get ripped off,” Gates advised.
