Colony of bees evicted from home

CONCORD, N.C. -- A Concord homeowner spent Saturday having some unwanted and dangerous tenants evicted.

A huge colony of bees had moves into the historic home of Amy Jones and her husband. Instead of having them exterminated, the family decided to have the bees safely moved. So with bees in the walls of the 100-year-old house, beekeepers from Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties set to work on their task.

Behind every board that Wayne Hanson and his partner Charles removed from the wall was a 2x3 foot nest and a lot of angry insects. The honey combs were peeled off and saved, while the bees were safely sucked into five-gallon buckets.

The process took about an hour. Once done, most of the bees were gone, and the Jones family was rid of their hidden tenants.

The beekeepers plan to join the collected bees with another colony. They estimate the colony had lived inside the house for about three years.
