MOORESVILLE -- The Mooresville police chief has been removed as head of a non-profit organization called Cops for Kids. An investigation into the program is now under way.

After more than four hours discussing the topic Monday night, the Mooresville town board agreed to remove Chief John Crone as head of the mentoring program which brings together kids and police officers. Officials will also look in to the finances of the non profit.

Mayor Bill Thunberg said interim Town Manager Erskine Smith recommended an external audit of Cops for Kids. An investigation is also expected by the Iredell County district attorney’s office and an outside party.

Town officials say questions regarding the group surfaced about how cash donations were spent, along with reports of conflicting account balances – though it isn’t clear who made the allegations.

"We'll go where the facts take us,” said Thunberg. “In the final analysis, it's the town manager's responsibility with regards to personnel and handling those kinds of personnel issues. It's our responsibility to make sure the public trust is maintained."

It is not known how long the investigation will take. Crone says he will be vindicated by the audit.

The program first started in Mooresville in 1997. Its travel trips usually consisted of the Law Enforcement Explorer post and the Mayor’s Youth Council.
