WHITEVILLE, N.C. -- Help is on the way for more than 425 people who will soon be out of a job in Columbus County.

Gov. Mike Easley has dispatched a rapid response team from the state’s Department of Commerce to assist employees laid off by Georgia Pacific. The company is laying off workers at its Whiteville wood facility due to poor market conditions.

The rapid response team will help the workers with job searched, financial planning and career counseling.
