RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley declared disaster areas in Johnston and Wilson counties after Saturday's deadly tornado.
The declaration will allow home and business owners to apply for state disaster assistance to help with repairs.
Easley has also requested a U.S. Small Business Administration disaster declaration, which would allow people to apply for low-interest federal loans.
The tornado struck early Saturday morning, killing two people – 60-year-old Marilyn Gomez in Kenly, N.C. and 11-year-old Josh Wiggins in Elm City, N.C.
In a press conference Monday, Easley said the areas may not qualify as federal disaster areas because the damage wasn't widespread enough to meet those guidelines.
In all, 18 homes were destroyed and 41 were damaged. Eight businesses were also damaged.
