Even the officials were cold as Independence took on East Meck Friday night.
Less than 24 hours after snow swept through parts of the state, high school football teams took to the field Friday night in frigid temperatures for the second week of the post-season.
In the Triangle, a couple of 1,000 yard-plus rushers went head to head in round two of the playoffs as Larry Parker and Lumberton paid a visit to Trea Jones and the Wake Forest-Rolesville Cougars.
At Trentini Stadium, the 4AA matchup picked up in the first quarter as Cougar quarterback Tim Hartman dropped back. But when he couldn't find a receiver, he tucked the ball and took off – 9 yards to pay dirt. That put Wake Forest-Rolesville up 7-0.

In the second quarter, Lumberton was unable to make the big plays. Hartman threw a wobbly pass right through the hands of Pirate Daimen Troy.
But in the very next play, Hartman showed he learns from his mistakes. He threw it up top to Jake Kahut, putting the Cougars up 14-0 and whipping fans into a frenzy.
Still in the second, Lumberton began to rally. Larry Parker took the hand-off, busting through the Cougar defense for a 35-yard touchdown.

In the third quarter, Cougar Trea Jones carved up the Lumberton defense for the touchdown.
Wake Forest-Rolesville won 41-7.
In Charlotte, the News 14's No. 1 Independence Patriots were trying to make it back to their ninth straight state championship game, but they needed to get past a cross-town rival to advance further. East Meck made the trip to Indy, in the hopes of derailing that reappearance.

But the Eagles went deep as Olen Little threw to Nick Bratton. He was brought down inside the Independence 10-yard-line. East Meck had to settle for a field goal, making it 7-3 after the one.
In the second quarter, with the Eagles backed up in the end zone, Little fumbled the snap and Ronald Howard was tackled for the safety.
Independence pushed forward, trouncing East Meck 43-16 and extending their season for at least one more week.
In Greensboro, the Page Pirates were looking to be rude hosts to the Wolverines of Fayetteville Westover.
In the third quarter, the Pirates were up 14-3. That was until Page quarterback Will Newman faked the handoff. He busted through the Westover defense for a 75-yard touchdown run, putting the Pirates up 21-3.
But the Will Newman show continued, with the fake handoff causing all sorts of problems for the Wolverines. Newman rambled 30 yards to pay dirt and the Pirates went up 28-3.
Page kept their dream alive with a 28-10 victory.
