Parents to speak out on reassignment

Last month, parents let their voices be heard at a meeting at Knightdale High School.
RALEIGH -- Wake County parents will get another chance Monday to speak out about the school system's new student assignment plan.

For the first time ever, the district has come up with a three-year assignment plan, giving parents an idea of which school their children will attend for the next few years. The plan affects nearly 30,000 students.

Monday's meeting will be held at Cary High School. Other meetings will take place Wednesday at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School and Thursday at Holly Springs High School. All meetings run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Also on Monday, Wake County commissioners are expected to decide if they will require the school system to cut nearly $6 million in local funds.

Earlier this month, the state asked the school system to cut $5.5 million, and the same day, Wake County leaders asked the school system to find $5.7 million in cuts to save county funds.

Administrators say it's impossible to cut $11 million without impacting schools but they'll try to find as many cuts as possible without affecting students in the classroom or cutting employees.

Administrators are expected to present a plan at the board of education's finance committee meeting Dec. 10.
