Fayetteville named most pro-military

FAYETTEVILLE – "Support our Troops" are words to live by in Fayetteville – at least "Time" magazine thinks so.

The publication named Fayetteville America's most pro-military town.

"Time" says with BRAC on its way, Fayetteville's pro-military stance is both patriotic and economically driven.

But some Fayetteville residents, like Jim Konneker, said they're not surprised.

Konneker is the commander of the Army's Army, which had a lot to do with the new title. It's an organization of individuals and businesses committed to making soldiers and their families feel appreciated and welcome.

And that's why he thinks the title is so well deserved. He said just since Desert Storm, things have changed in the All-American City, with more families of soldiers sticking around during deployments.

"All the families went home, to wherever home was and during this war, they've stayed here," Konneker said.

Fayetteville Mayor Tony Chavonne said the people of Fayetteville have an increased sensitivity to what service men and women go through.

"War is not a political word here in Fayetteville," Chavonne said. "War is where our neighbors and friends go to defend the freedom we all enjoy."

Fayetteville's economy relies heavily on military families, a fact that does not escape the Army's Army.

It's a good reason for Fayetteville to support its troops, but Konneker said so is good, old-fashioned patriotism.

"They are doing one terrific job for our country, in protecting us and protecting our way of life," he said. "It just makes me proud to be here and to be associated with them."
