DURHAM – No matter which color their team wears, Triangle college students all went green for Earth Day Wednesday by advocating and showcasing sustainability on campus.

Grease from the weekly chicken lunch at N.C. Central University's cafeteria became diesel fuel for one such showing. For Earth Day, Piedmont Biofuels brought their Mobile Biodiesel Education Trailer to campus to show students how they take cafeteria frying oil and make it renewable fuel every day.

"Just to know you can use grease from, say, a restaurant or even our school, that would definitely help stop pollution," N.C. Central sophomore Chris Coleman said.

Using cafeteria grease to make fuel is just one way area college students learned about sustainability. The message carried over to other campuses on Earth Day.

UNC Chapel Hill went green with an Earth Day festival in the Polk Quad. Organizers said more students than ever came out this year.

"One thing that really excites me is knowing that our generation is going to have to make the change. I think a lot of people realize that," said Bill Bobbitt, a UNC sophomore and organizer of the event.

For once, N.C. State students agreed with their local rivals as they marked the day with a green festival in the brickyard.

"It's important for us as the younger generation to really step up as leaders and show that sustainability is a forefront issue," N.C. State freshman Matt Woodhouse said.

Colemansaid no matter which school students go to now, everyone in their generation must learn about sustainability for the years ahead.

"We are the future of this country," said Coleman.
