RALEIGH -- A lawyer for the woman accused of fleeing to Canada with 17-month-old twins has asked a judge to release her from jail.

A federal judge had ruled at a hearing last week that Allison Quets must stay in jail until her trial.

But Wilmington lawyer Dennis Sullivan argues in a court filing that his client should be able to be released and stay with a friend in Florida under house arrest.

Quets is charged with international parental kidnapping after taking the twins, who she had given up for adoption. Quets still had visiting rights as the adoption made its way through the courts.

At a hearing last week, prosecutors portrayed Quets as willing to do anything to be reunited with the twins she conceived through in-vitro fertilization.

The twins have been back at home with their adoptive parents in Apex.
