News 14 Carolina's Claudine Chalfant has more on how you can help save the environment.
The average trash bag takes 1,000 years degrade in a landfill, according to experts with Let's Go Green and the Two Hands Worldshop.
Some simple choices about the items we use everyday can help the environment. We all use trash bags; instead of taking 1,000 years, the biodegradable variety takes only about 12 to 18 months.
Kyle Jodice, with Let's Go Green, says if every American household used one roll of recycled paper towels a month, it compares to saving a million trees. You can also use napkins, tissues and toilet paper made from recycled products.
The same thing goes for household items you use in the kitchen everyday.
"Works just the same. You really notice no difference in the products you're using,” Jodice said. “It's after you're done using them that the real difference takes place. We're all hearing about doing our part so these are just the little changes you can do at home and you're doing your part to help out."
Jodice says no individual can make a big difference but if enough of us make a little difference, it will all add up.
