STATESVILLE, N.C. – Hundreds of people gathered outside of the Fairview Baptist Church hours before Iredell County's second flu clinic even began.

Iredell County originally scheduled four clinics to distribute both the seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 vaccine and nasal mist. However, two had to be cancelled when the health department received a series of small shipments of the vaccine. As a result of the limited supply, only those in the high risk categories received a vaccination, including children, pregnant women and those with medical conditions.

"I've called all around to different places, but no, I haven't been able to find it anywhere else," said Union County resident Toni Stefani.

Demand continues to outnumber supply, and organizers did not believe everyone would be able to be served.

"I got here around 7:00am," explained Union County resident Mike Thomas. He brought his lawn chair and waited for hours. He was saving a place for his seven-year-old daughter so she could get a few more hours of sleep.

"Because obviously supplies are limited and so we didn't really know what would be available. So we wanted to make sure, at least as parents, that we gave her every opportunity to have the shot," Thomas said.

The health department expects to organize additional H1N1 drive-through clinics. However, those dates have not been set. In the meantime, they are asking residents to call their physicians and remain patient.

"For the H1N1, I do believe that we will have enough vaccine to vaccinate anyone who wants it," Susan Johnson, with the Iredell County Health Department, said.

But health officials said they're just not sure how long it will take to get enough vaccine for everyone.
