HIGH POINT – The Guilford County cycle team hit the course on Thursday just as they have twice a week for the past few months as the group gets ready for this weekend’s North Carolina Special Olympics in High Point.

The cyclists, ranging in age from 12-50 will compete in the Fall Games. They’re just a handful of more than 500 athletes from across the state going for the gold in cycling, roller skating and soccer.

Cycling coach Mike Beeson says he gets his competitors for four months out of the year as they ride in area competitions and qualifiers. This weekend they’ll be trying their luck in the 500 meter and long distance races.

And no matter what their disabilities may be, Beeson says his athletes train hard with the help of 12 coaches that go out on the road with them. A gold medal is the goal of all that training, though it’s not all about winning.

"It's a great atmosphere -- great experience with new friends, old friends, going to the hotels, going to the dance, [being] with my family,” listed Hayley Beeson, a 27-year-old athlete.

The Fall Games are Saturday and Sunday at:

• Skate South Skating Center on Fairfield Road will host the roller skating games from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

• The soccer tournament will be at the High Point Athletic Complex from 10:45 a.m.-5 p.m.

• The cycling event will be outside Bank of America on Piedmont Triad Center from 10:45 a.m-5 p.m.
